Turtles and Bicycles, Bicycles and Turtles
And then when I sat down, Ray looked at me funny and said, "Yer a freak."
Ray stood up and walked over to where Heuy was talking to Welsh. I watched Ray leave and looked down at myself. Well yes, I did resemble a freak but it was still inappropriate. I sat the contemplating the whole 'freak' business when I noticed Ray was standing in front of me.
"Pitter patter, let's get at her." he said as he motioned towards the door. "We gotta get ya a change of clothes."
I suppose that my uniform is out of place in this timeline. See, I'm for about 2 000 years in the future so I don't exactly 'fit in'. I follow Ray outside the building where he works, a police station he said, and into his...uh automobile. I remember that's what Tom called them.
We started moving and I watched everything go by in fascination, when I noticed Ray looking at me.
"We're here."
I nodded and followed him into another building. We got into something that looked like a turbolift, only more primitive. He punched a couple of buttons and we started moving.
"Okay, so Welsh has got me, umm...uh,"
"Baby-sitting me," I say.
He looked up at me from the point on the floor at which he stood, surprised. I guess he had reason to be surprised since I haven't talked from the point Welsh introduced me to him and all I had done was nod my head. I guess I really haven't spoken around him, so yeah.
Anyway, we went into his quarters, no *apartment*, and he started rummaging around and mumbling about the state his apartment was in while he went into another room. I looked around. It was interesting. There was a bicycle hanging from one wall and there was a tank of some sort by another. As Ray came back out I turned my attention away from the tank towards him, but I couldn't think of anything to say so I just let the words form themselves.
"That's a reptile, part of the marine species, right?" Well that was brilliant.
"Uh, yeah. It's um, called a turtle."
*******
Okay so this isn't exactly what I had in mind for today. Standing in an elevator, *my* elevator, the one that leads to the floor that *my* apartment is on, with some guy that looks like he stepped out of another galaxy. Well yeah, technically that is where he says he's from, but he's got to be unhinged. Probably more unhinged then Fraser, but we're not supposed to be thinking about him.
"Okay so Welsh has got me, umm...uh,"
I didn't know what to say. I'm not even sure exactly what I was assigned to do with him. And then...
"Baby-sitting me."
He talked. Surprised the hell out of me. Not the fact that he can talk, it was his voice. It was deep and soft and it just kind of washed over me, even though he sounded annoyed. Kinda like Fraser's voice, no matter what tone he spoke in it still did things to me. But like I said, we're not supposed to be thinking about him.
We got into my apartment and I had completely forgotten about the mess. I picked up all the clothes and took them into the bedroom. I had to have something that would fit him. I went back out into the living room after finding something that just might work and found him looking at my turtle.
"That's a reptile, part of the marine species, right?"
Definitely a freak. Never heard anyone call a turtle *that* before.
"Uh, yeah. It's um, called a turtle." I walked past him and turned on a light to make the room easier to see. "Let's get you undressed...err...uh...yeah, so we can get you dressed."
I turned away when I realized what I had said and motioned to the bedroom. "They should fit you."
"Thanks."
As soon as I heard the door close I groaned and banged my head against the wall a couple of times. 'Oh that was great, just wonderful. "Let's get you undressed," very smart.' I banged my head a couple more times just to make sure and headed into the kitchen for some aspirin. I was so anticipating a headache.
